Jodi Kanter has served as dramaturg for a number of professional productions at Washington area theaters including RoundHouse, Theatre J, Mosaic, and Olney Theatre. Her major adapting and directing projects include a multi-year theatre workshop series at the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners, an oral-history based performance project for Missouri’s Alliance for Compassionate Care at the End of Life, and a multi-year collaboration with the graduate school of social work at Missouri State University. At GW, she has an ongoing collaboration with Children’s National Hospital and the GW Medical School to produce an annual 90-minute performance that provides research ethics training to medical faculty.

Kanter’s scholarly articles have appeared in Text and Performance Quarterly, Theatre Annual, Cultural Studies / Critical Methodologies, and in several edited volumes. She currently serves on the editorial board of TPQ. Kanter holds a B.A. in English Literature from Harvard University, an M.A. in Communication Studies from UNC Chapel Hill, and a Ph.D. in Performance Studies from Northwestern University. She is a trained facilitator of Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed. Before coming to GW, Kanter was Associate Professor of Theatre and Dance at Missouri State University, where she won awards for her teaching, creative work, and service.
