THURS. MAY 26 | Post-Show Discussion and Talkback with Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League (SMYA
Thursday, May 26, 2016
Following the 8:00PM performance, join us for a post-show discussion and talkback featuring Mia Lillis and Jhane Fletcher of Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League (SMYAL).
Mia Lillis has been involved with Gay-Straight Alliances and with LGBTQ youth advocacy since the age of 15, when she served as secretary of her high school GSA. Since that time, Mia has continuted her involvement with Gay-Straight Alliances and with the LGBTQ community. in 2011, she was selected to serve on the exclusive Core Council for LGBTQ students of the University of Notre Dame, and simultaneously served as the social chair for the campus' unofficial Gay-Straight Alliance, AllianceND. In the spring of 2012, Mia became a leader of the 4 to 5 Movement - an advocacy movement pushing for greater inclusivity of LGBTQ students of Notre Dame, and specifically fighting for recognition of the unofficial Gay-Straight Alliance. Mia was thrilled to lead the 4 to 5 movement in securing this goal, and Notre Dame's officially recognized Gay-Straight Alliance organization held its first meeting in the fall of 2013. Mia is thrilled to continue being involved in LGBTQ advocacy work with SMYAL, and relishes the opportunity to mentor youth in the DC area fighting battles similar to the ones she encountered in her youth. Originally from Austin, Texas, Mia moved to D.C. in 2014 and has enjoyed taking advantage of the advocacy opportunities in our nation's capital.
Jhane Fletcher has been a SMYAL youth for almost three years. They refer to their self as a professional queer. Jhane has a booming passion for activism, especially surrounding black and queer movements. They will be part of strengthening SMYAL programs for the upcoming year. Jhane expressed that it was a complete honor to be working for SMYAL.
