APPRENTICESHIPS

Mosaic Theater Company of DC is pleased to launch an exciting new opportunity for burgeoning theatre artists and arts administrators who are in college, graduate school, or are recent graduates. Apprenticeships with Mosaic provide on-the- job training for early-career theatre artists and arts administrators at DC’s hottest new theater, named by the Washington Post as a “Best of 2017” pick.

Apprentices can request to be tracked in the following departments: Company Management, Production Management, Development, Community Engagement, Education, Graphic Design, Marketing and Public Relations, or Accessibility. Apprentices will work in a rigorous, fast-paced environment geared towards developing and enhancing their professional acumen. As appropriate, Mosaic will work with the apprentice’s academic institution should the experience be undertaken for class credit. Additionally, Mosaic apprentices will learn about all aspects of the professional theater through brown bag lunches, seminars, meetings with directors and designers, and mentorship from team leads. Apprentices receive a travel stipend to offset transportation costs.

APPRENTICESHIP DESCRIPTIONS: 

Company Management

The Company Apprentice works closely with the Company Manager. The primary goal of this

apprenticeship is to learn company management practices by providing support and creating a positive

experience for all visiting artists as well as assist with contracts in the administrative office.

 

The apprentice works with the Company Manager to schedule and facilitate guest artist travel, manage

artist housing and respond to visiting artists’ day-to- day needs. In addition, the apprentice will help

maintain the housing and travel calendar as well as help manage housing and travel budget lines. The

Company Management Apprentice provides administrative support during the rehearsal process.

 

Production Management

The Production Management Apprentice works closely with the Production Manager. The primary goal

of this apprenticeship is to learn production management practices by providing support and creating a

positive experience for all designers and technical personnel.

 

The apprentice works with the Production Manager to schedule production staffing, and respond to

designers’ day-to- day during the production process. In addition, the apprentice will help maintain the

staffing calendar and staffing budget lines. This hands-on technical experience will provide the

apprentice with exposure to all aspects of the production process. The Production Apprentice also

assists with execution of all production meetings and provides administrative support to the Production

Team during the rehearsal and tech processes.

 

Development

The Development Apprentice works closely with the Development Team. The primary goal of this

apprenticeship is to learn fundraising, institutional storytelling, and connecting artistic vision with fiscal

stewardship.

The apprentice will receive exposure to Mosaic’s fundraising program, which includes individual and

institutional giving and corporate partnership and events as well as Patron Manager Software.

Additionally, there will be an emphasis on planning and execution of opening night events, direct mail

and solicitation writing, grant writing, and stewardship of Mosaic’s corporate and foundation donor

pool. The Development Apprentice provides administrative support during the season.

 

Community Engagement

The Community Engagement Apprentice works closely with the Community Partnerships Manger and

the Associate Producer for Public Programming. The primary goal of this apprenticeship is to learn

community building, institutional storytelling, and connecting artistic vision with community

partnership.

 

The apprentice will support all aspects of building community partnerships including stewarding

individual and institutional collaboration. Additionally, there will be an emphasis on planning and

execution of post-show discussions and curated panels. The Community Engagement Apprentice also

provides administrative support during the season.

 

Education

The Education Apprentice works closely with the Associate Artistic Director. The primary goal of this

apprenticeship is to learn how to build a of a cross-cultural theatre education program. The apprentice

supports Mosaic’s burgeoning education initiatives.

The apprentice will support the Student Matinee Program and help with programming and planning for

the A.I.R. programs. The education apprentice also provides day-to- day administrative support during

the season.

 

Graphic Design

The Graphic Design Apprentice works closely with the Director of Publications and Digital Assets. The

primary goal of this apprenticeship is to learn the basics of graphic design for programs, advertisements,

posters, flyers, invitations, e-mail graphics, and online collateral.

The apprentice will also gain exposure to video production for marketing and promotional purposes. The

apprentice will have the opportunity to assist with digital marketing content. Competency with Adobe

Creative Suite with focus in Photoshop, InDesign, Premeire, Adobe After Effects is preferred. Applicants

will be required to submit work samples that demonstrate their aptitude for the position. The Graphic

Design Apprentice also provides administrative support to the Communications Team during the season.

 

Marketing and Public Relations

The Marketing and Public Relations Apprentice works closely with the Director of Marketing and Public

Relations. The primary goal of this apprenticeship is to learn how to market and effectively promote an

emerging non-profit theatre, working closely with all members of communications team.

The apprentice will receive training in the areas of the planning and implementation of key marketing

operations including: advertising, media contracting, copyediting/proofreading, press and media

relations, social media and digital marketing creation, distribution of promotional materials, archiving of

all media and marketing collateral, grassroots marketing strategies, planning events, volunteer

coordination, and researching new marketing opportunities. The Marketing and Public Relations

Apprentice also provides administrative support to the Communications Team during the season to

include website maintenance, communicating with patrons/subscribers, and data management.

 

Accessibility

The Accessibility Apprentice works closely with the Accessibility Fellow. The primary goal of this

apprenticeship is to learn best practices in making Mosaic productions accessible to patrons by

providing logistical and outreach support for Mosaic’s burgeoning accessibility initiatives.

The apprentice works with the Accessibility Fellow to assist with interpreter booking, as well as

formatting and testing scripts for open captions. In addition, the apprentice will help collect feedback on

ASL interpreted and OC shows from Deaf audience members and liaise with the Gallaudet University

community and Mosaic Theater. The ideal candidate will demonstrate fluency in ASL. The Accessibility

Apprentice provides administrative support during the season.
